16/8/07 - RACE REPORT FROM FRANCE: Finally cracked it for a win here in France today, it is an important religious public holiday and I won the NEVERS triathlon which is a very long running triathlon in the centre of France. The distance was 1.5/42/12. My time was 2hrs 10mins which was the 2nd fastest winning time in the history of the event. It was very hot, about 31 degrees, which probably played into my hands a bit as I've experienced most of my best results in hot conditions. There was a big crowd there in the afternoon and it was really nice to get a win up after my forced lay off from competition at the start of the year. It was however a really sad week for my club here after one of our juniors, Alexis, was hit by a car four days ago here in Tours and was killed instantly. He was quite a talented young triathlete. I've had trouble coming to terms with it actually and thought a lot about it yesterday while racing. If there is a God up there, He sure does roll a cruel dice at times. It's just devastating for the club (we are only a small club with a great spirit). Maybe I drew strength from him yesterday as I felt quite strong and dropped the race favourite, Anthony Pannier, at the halfway point in the run. It's the best I have run in a few years. Now I'm off to the East of France for an important teams race on Saturday at Vesoul (near Germany). Heading back to Australia in less than two weeks now. Hope all is great. Cheers. Boyd.

Boyd who?
One young Australian competing in Ironman Japan is competing in his third Ironman ever, and his first outside Australia. Celebrating ten years in triathlon with his move into the Ironman pro ranks, Boyd Conrick also remains one of Australian top Life Savers, (he’s a real life Baywatch kinda guy!) and this year won the Australian Championship in Surf Life Saving for the 2km sand run. He’s also gone sub-nine in Ironman, and finished Ironman Australia in tenth, going 9:01 this year…He’s also developed a triathlon pedigree; even though this pro athlete is also a full time fireman in ‘real’ life at home in Newcastle, New South Wales on Australia’s east coast. He’s won over 50 short course races and has twice been NSW Champion. Stepping up to the long course events he was third in the Cannibal Gold Coast Half Ironman and 6th outright in the recent Australian Long Distant Championships. His first visit to Japan is already being filled with memories. “It seems so good here.” The 31 year old told Ironmanlive.com. “It’s very picturesque and the island of Fukue is especially so.” “The island is also very mountainous and this presents a big challenge on the course, not only for ascending but also for descending too.” The Life Saver is also looking forward to the swim…“I like the choppy conditions if the wind blows strong. I relish an ocean swim and this will suit me and the bonus is the water is so clear and clean…” So Japan has so far been a great experience for the young Australian. “The hospitality from the Japanese is first class and every one here is so very helpful, but for me the language barrier is always a challenge. However I’ve had three seasons in France in the last few years, so I know that sometimes when you travel there are some pitfalls.” So remember the name Boyd Conrick. As Race Director Mickey Yamamoto says of him, “He’ll be a sunshine finisher!” And don’t we all wish for that!
